63RD INDEPENDENCE: DAKUM CALLS FOR PURPOSEFUL GOVERNAMCE TO END NIGERIANS MALAISE AND WOES

As Nigeria celebrates its 63rd independence anniversary amidst throes of poverty, insecurity, skyrocketing inflation, Van Der Waals unity and despair, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Human Virology Nigeria, who also was Plateau Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Dr. Patrick Sunday Dakum, has called for purposeful governance in the country at all levels to grossly minimize these woes to the barest minimum.

Dakum lamented that after 63 years of self-rule, Nigeria is yet to cross the borderline of third world countries popularly defined as developing countries, saying the country should have had by now solid functional institutions for the protection and promotion of the citizens’ welfare which is the essence of government. Alas, it’s bedeviled with birth pains of nationhood struggling with challenges of regional, ethnic and religious fusses, high rate of unemployment, poverty and inflation, dilapidated roads and so many infrastructures, poor power supply and virtually nonexistence of good water supply, soaring crime rate, kidnappings, mismanagement of public funds, gross insecurity, deteriorating public schools and decadent educational system where original scholars are not produced.

According to him, the country is endowed with natural and human resources with great potentialities of bettering the welfare of all citizens and full infrastructural development, but the bane of non-commitment to good governance and patriotism have plunged the country into a state of massive despair leading to colossal migration of human assets to other countries seeking greener pastures.

In his independence message, Dakum admonished all Nigerians to use the period and reflect on the kind of nation they want to live in and the legacies they want to leave for posterity, and to work assiduously towards a virile and viable country.

He calls for prayers for leaders and the entire country to brace up and work for a better Nigeria where peace, unity and egalitarianism will rule supreme. Our trust is in God. Unless He builds the house, our labor will be in vain
