As the University of Jos prepares for its 26th convocation ceremony on Saturday 6th April 2013, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Heyward Mafuyai has confirmed that a total of 7,946 students have satisfied conditions for the award of various degrees by the institution and shall therefore be convocation.
At a press conference held in preparation for the convocation ceremony, he provided the breakdown of the graduating candidates as follows: PhD – 50 candidates, Post Graduate Diploma – 67, Bachelors degrees – 5709, Diplomas – 1598 and Certificates – 31. He further confirmed that of the 5,709 students being awarded various Bachelors degress, 9 were graduating with First Class Honours and that of the 9, five (5) were from the Pharmacy department.
Honourary degrees would also be conferred on several distinguished personalities, including Mr. Afe Babalola, Mr Ahmed Joda and Da Bitrus Kim.
On a separate development, the Vice Chancelor stated that a contract for the construction of an additional hostel for the University had been awarded and that the finalisation date was the end of 2013. A separate contract which was previously awarded to a contractor in Jos, but for which the quality of work did not meet the requirements of the University was terminated, he said.
