Ahead of the general elections, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has called on Nigerians to evaluate the performance and antecedents of candidates seeking their votes.

These were some of the major points that emerged from the Bishops Conference, held in Abuja, contained in a press statement signed by Rev. Fr. Alexander Dung, Director of Communications, Jos Catholic Archdiocesan Chancery, made available to journalists in Jos, Monday.
It reads, “According to the Bishops, it is the responsibility of Nigerians to evaluate the performance and antecedents of those who ask for their votes before going to the polls.

With the tensions associated with campaigns and preparations for the forthcoming elections, “the Bishops drew the attention of all political actors and parties to the fact that they are individually and collectively responsible for the electoral process and its outcome.

The Bishops acknowledge the efforts of security operatives in the fight against insurgents and called on government to take more decisive steps towards ensuring the safety of citizens as the 2015 elections approach.

They recognized the plight of victims of victims of Boko Haram, and sympathised with them.
The Bishops announced the re-election of the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most. Rev. Ignatius Kaigama as President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, and Most. Rev. Augustine Akabueze as Vice President for a second term.
