The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner for Plateau State, Hon Habu Zarma has warned politicians in the state to stop campaigning for the 2015 general elections or risk arrest.

Zarma, who issued the threat on Thursday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, said campaign activities at this time were in violation of the Electoral Act.

Speaking while presenting the INEC 2012-2016 Strategic Plan during a stakeholders’ meeting, Zarma said it had come to the notice of INEC that some politicians and political parties had started uncontrolled campaign towards the forthcoming general election, thereby heating up the polity.

He said the commission had also observed that campaign posters were indiscriminately displayed outside the legal provision for campaign towards elections into various offices.

He noted that “Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (As amended) provides that the period of campaign in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day,” adding that political campaigns at this time was harmful to the political process and would not be tolerated
