The Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has approved the release of counterpart funds for the completion of all ongoing UNICEF projects in some Local Government Areas of the State. TheState Commissioner of water resources, Ja’afaru Wuyep disclose this while hosting the chief officer UNICEF zone D Dr. Abdulahi Kaikai in his office.
The Commissioner for water resources Ja’arfaru Wuyep who appreciated the contribution of UNICEF in vital sectors such as health and water said the Plateau State Government will continue to make efforts in paying the 30% counterpart fund expected of it in order to ensure that grass roots are adequately covered. He explained that deliberations are ongoing with the State house of assembly towards ensuring that prompt release of funds has commenced.
Briefing the Commissioner, UNICEF chief of field office zone D Dr. Kaikai disclosed that the organization is presently on ground in Shendam and Riyom LGAs executing projects in water supply, sanitation and hygiene. Kaikai added they are in collaboration with Plateau State rural water supply and sanitation agency last year and tendered a dossiers for the procurement of about 300 hand pump blowholes and 80 block latrines but the nonpayment of the counterpart fund by the State Government has stalled the process, while reassuring of EUand UNICEF commitments towards improving the water and health sector of the state.
