No fewer than five people were feared killed, scores severely injured and many houses destroyed in a fierce confrontation between the Fulani herdsmen and Eggon farmers.

The incident happened in Ambaka area of Wamba local government area, Nasarawa State, Saturday.

Trouble was said to have started when three Fulani herdsmen attacked with machetes and killed an Eggon farmer in his farm land for confronting a Fulani man who invaded his farm with cows eating and destroying his farm produce.

The incident happened in Ambaka area of Wamba local government area, Nasarawa State, Saturday.

Trouble was said to have started when three Fulani herdsmen attacked with machetes and killed an Eggon farmer in his farm land for confronting a Fulani man who invaded his farm with cows eating and destroying his farm produce.

This action was said to have angered Eggon youths who received the news, they immediately regrouped and attacked a Fulani community killing two in the process.

However the Fulani herdsmen also ambushed and killed two Eggon youths on their way back, prompting the Eggon youths to grouped and returned to the Fulani settlement on Sunday for reprisal but found the place deserted as they have fled their homes.

The Eggon youths who were reportedly battle ready then set the entire Fulani settlement ablaze.

Speaking on the incident, the chairman of Wamba local government area, Hon. Musa Wayo, said the matter was promptly reported to the police who took proactive steps to ensure that the violence did no escalate.

Hon. Wayo who pleaded with both parties to sheathe their swords for peace to reign called on his subjects to stop rumour-mongering that serves to instil fear and escalate tension.

When contacted, the police public relations officer (PPRO), Ismaila Numa, said so far the police had recovered four corpses which had been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital.

He also said the police had ensured the return of normalcy to the area, adding that those who fled their homes had started to return.
